On-Carriage

In logistics, it refers to the delivery of the goods directly to the receiver. In a transport chain with multiple stages (combined transport), the on-carriage takes place after the so-called main carriage.

  • Pre-carriage: Pick-up from the sender
  • Main carriage: Transport to the unloading terminal
  • On-carriage: Transport to the receiver

Pre-carriage is the counterpart of on-carriage. During pre-carriage, the goods are collected from different senders. Both are essential to guarantee an efficient and punctual delivery. In general, both pre-and on-carriage are carried out by truck, as this is the most flexible means of transport.

It is often a partial process of the transport of grouped loads. Thus, the optimisation of the deliveries and detailed planning are especially important in this context. The route needs to be planned so that the receivers are approached in an ideal sequence for the delivery of the goods. Thus, the transport vehicle also needs to be loaded in a logical sequence. Changes in the pre- and main carriage increase the difficulty. In the case of a full load, the planning during the on-carriage is less complex.

The TMS CarLo and the add-on CarLo inAIR&SEA also display the pre-, main and on-carriage as parts of combined transport.
