Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC)

The Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) is a unique number that marks and identifies a shipping unit (container, package, pallet). SSCC is the international designation for this code. The SSCC applies to the entire supply chain and is always globally unique. Overlapping numbers are not possible. If shipping units are merged to form a larger shipping unit, a new, superordinate SSCC can be assigned.

The advantage of an SSCC is, above all, the smooth transfer of consignments and consignment tracking. The SSCC can be scanned in combination with a printed barcode. Furthermore, it simplifies the legally required traceability of certain goods.

The number has a total of 18 numeric characters, divided into five parts:

  • Data identifier (00) at the beginning
  • Reserve digit: number between 0 and 9, freely selectable by the creator
  • GS1 (GLN): base number of the creating company
  • Digit sequence for identification freely assigned by the creator
  • Check digit
