Bill of Lading (BoL or B/L)

Bill of Loding

The bill of lading or BoL, B/L, bill of loading or bill of landing is a certificate for a concluded sea freight contract. As a sea freight document, the bill of lading is the most important document in the transport and a document of title for the certified goods.

This document regulates the legal relationship between the shipper and the receiver and is issued by the shipper at the request of the unloader. With the bill of lading, the shipper certifies receipt of the goods to the unloader and promises proper delivery.

In Germany, the structure, content and effects of the bill of lading are legally defined in the commercial code. Within the bill of lading, there are still various distinctions, e.g. depending on the time of issue, the terms on-board bill of lading and received bill of lading exist.
