Transshipment Warehouse

A transshipment warehouse (or depot) is a temporary storage place without any long-term stock. Cargo and goods are not stored there until they are sold, which would be the case in a regular warehouse. In the transshipment warehouse, cargo and goods are delivered, processed, and, usually even on the same or next day, forwarded to the receiver. Therefore, the time a package or good is stored is brief.

Most big forwarding companies use it as this saves costs. Due to the brief stock placement and the quick exchange of the goods, no big warehouse is required, which saves heating, staff and rent costs.

This type of warehouse is used when the means of transport (truck/vessel/train/airplane) needs to be changed for the further transport. Transshipment warehouses are also used by parcel services to send grouped goods, or by forwarding companies with many smaller transports all across the globe.
