The apprenticeship as an IT specialist for system integration at Soloplan

Hardware, software, network structures, firewalls etc. you have everything under control and make sure the technology is working? If so, become an everyday hero at Soloplan and start your apprenticeship for the IT specialist for system integration, just like our apprentice Florian S.!

Hey Florian, you are in the first year of your apprenticeship. What else should we know about you?
I’m 18 years old and I started my apprenticeship for the IT specialist for system integration half a year ago. My hobbies are among others skateboarding and parkour.

Why did you decide on this apprenticeship?
During a nine-week long internship at a software company I was able to get to know all the different aspects of information technology. I really liked the combination of hardware and software. On the one hand, for example, I wanted to know the inner workings of a computer, on the other hand I’m also interested in network configuration etc.

In which departments have you already been and what were your tasks?
During the first semester I was given the opportunity to get to know out logistics software CarLo in our service department. That was really helpful, because I got a good insight into the company and the product that way. In the service department I had a lot of customer contact, both at the hotline and at the customer’s site. In the beginning I found it difficult to advise customers on the phone and to find solutions for their problems, but thanks to the fantastic support and training by my colleagues it did not take long for this to settle down. Near the end of my time with the service department, I went to a customer’s site for the first time. There, I installed/configured our logistics software CarLo together with an experienced service employee.

You spend the most time during your apprenticeship for IT specialist for systems integration in our IT department. Since it’s our job to support every employee with IT questions and problems, my job there is incredibly diverse. I prepare the workstations of new employees, for example, add them as users in our network, install every programme and make sure that the new employees have a smooth start in their new job. What I like most of all, is that every day provides a new challenge, because no two problems are the same.

What does your typical everyday work look like at the moment?
First thing in the morning I check my mails and check whether something important needs to be done. If there are no emergencies, I complete the tasks assigned to me. In my lunch break I get something to eat from nearby. The great thing about Soloplan City are the many possibilities for getting lunch, from bakeries to Italian restaurants. And if I don’t want to leave Soloplan City for food, I can also choose between three lunch menus that change daily and that are brought to the company by a catering service. Soloplan even covers a part of the costs. At the end of the work day we always have a short department meeting, where we talk about the current status of our tasks and plan future projects.

How did you become aware of Soloplan in the first place?
I learned about Soloplan at the apprenticeship fair in Kempten. The HR employee at the stand told me many interesting things about Soloplan and the different apprenticeships and after that I applied for a week-long internship here. During that time, I made contact with many departments such as the IT, the service and the development department and therefore got an insight into the different areas of the company. I liked it here so much that I applied for an apprenticeship here.

What subjects do you have at school?
There are IT classes like Linked Systems, where you learn the basics about managing networks, or Applications and Programming, which includes topics like the programming language Java. Apart from these subjects I also have general classes like PE, German, Social Studies or English.

However, my favourite subject is IT Technical Systems. The teacher is great and you work on your own for the most part. This class is a bit more demanding, because very often mathematical aspects are part of it, but it’s also incredibly interesting.

What advice would you give to new apprentices?
I think the most important advice for new apprentices is that it is really easy to become part of the everyday company life here. You don’t have to be afraid that you need to know everything in the beginning but you can ask a lot of questions.

I also really like the fact that you can work together with the individual heads of departments in a concentrated and productive way, but you can have a lot of fun at the same time. When you are an apprentice you are not treated as “the newbie”, but you are welcomed with arms wide open. Soloplan really is like a small family.

What are your plans for the future?
After my apprenticeship I want to work in the IT for Soloplan full time. I realised, that I really like this job and that I have a lot of fun doing it.
